Skill & Creativity

Hzu Khim And Her Lumix

Over the past few weeks, I’ve observed (yes, I actually do Rachel) and noticed that for any creative (musician, photographer, writer, designer, etc) are essential and go hand-in-hand together.

I’m gonna look pursue this very generic-sounding post in two-perspectives.

----------------------------------------------------

Make Sure Your Skill Rivals Your Creativity

Wouldn’t be sad if one did not have the vocabulary to support his ideas? Imagine Isaac Newton, upon having the apple drop down from the tree, rushed off to see his associates at Cambridge and went

“Guys! Oh my gosh, oh my gosh! The apple…and then the tree…and then boom!”

Or Einstein on being asked to explain his E=mc² theory, going

“Dude, protons and stuff like get together and go totally ninja on each other”

Get the point?

Lets assume wannabe conductor is preparing a draft. He has a brilliant song in his head which would have rivalled that of Bach or Beethoven’s compositions, but when it was time for him to pen it down to score, he couldn’t even recall how many flats there were in E Major (actually it has four sharps…). What a pity then.

Personally, I believe that of all the musicians I know, about half of them have way, way, way more potential than what they currently are. However, this is where our humanity fails us with plagues such as laziness, pride, jealousy and immaturity get in the way. Who knew that practising a little bit everyday would be such a burden? Who knew that your arrogance cost you the opportunity to shine.

I recently met Jan (J4N is his band) and I was immediately blown away by his dedication to his craft. This guy practices hours upon hours a day without fail. But it pays off. He is one monster on the fret board. All the best, dude!

People who can express what they think are the best to work with.

Make Sure Your Creativity Rivals Your Skill

Any amateur photographer knows about the Rule of Thirds, Leading Lines and all the other composition rules, but can he capture an encapsulating portrait?

In the same way, a pianist may work his or her way up to an ABRSM Grade 8 (I made it to Grade 5…hehe) certificate, but do their compositions draw out emotion from the audience?

So how does one acquire this? Its not as easy as acquiring skill, as it demands more than a repetitive action, rather a repetitive thought. Some are admittedly born or bred since young, and they pick it up easier, but getting the ‘groove’ of things, I believe, can be developed like anything else. It requires a lot more listening and hearing though. Listening to CD after CD. Looking at picture after picture. Getting the idea behind the art.

This is usually the case for me. Many times I’ve have had to struggle with the creative aspect of whatever I do. No soul. Yes, I’ve been able to play a simple eight-beat on the drum set for ten years now, but even that should make the hair on your hands stand up.

Photographers like those I know at Buggershots and Wedding Story do it best. They have the skill. That’s a given. But what I admire is the ability to capture not just another photograph but awe-inspiring moments in a frame.

My 21st

Since I had to run about the whole night, I ended taking almost no pictures that night. What happened was I left my camera there and left it to whoever wanted to take pictures. I must say, I have a talented friends.
