Minority Report
The are many many sad truths about the automotive industry in Malaysia. One of them is that as good as cars may be, some will never be popular and will never be flying out of showrooms. Reasons attaining to this include poor brand reception, high maintenance (servicing and parts) cost. Below are just a few cars which are available in Malaysian showrooms but sadly will never gain the sales they deserve.
1. Hyundai i30
Relative to older Hyundais which were as dynamic as cereal boxes, the new generation of ‘i’ models look pretty. In their attempt to woo new buyers, they are offering the car with a five (not a 3+2…a full five) year warranty, three years free service and loads of equipment. Yet because it is a Hyundai, it will never sell in Malaysia. I have yet to see a handful on the road.
2. Kia Forte
Just look at it. I think this is the best looking car under RM100k in the country right now. And yes, it is under RM100k. Basically, you’re getting a Toyota Altis for a price of a Toyota Vios (somewhat). Problem? Like the Hyundai, its a Kia. And Kias will always be rubbish, even if this one is not.
3. Ford Mondeo
The Mondeo has won tons of awards including numerous ‘Car Of The Year’ ones as well. It apparently drives as well as a Merc and comes with a 6-speed gearbox, 7 airbags and lovely interior trim. The trouble is that the after sales support is not as good compared to Toyotas or Hondas, so while this car is way better than a Camry or Accord, it will never sell as well.
There are so many other cars that suffer their fate; the Mazda6, Peugeot 308 and half the VW fleet. Fantastic cars which in their own ways are better than the competition, but lack local interest because of the automotive industry’s issues here in the country. The day high taxes go out the door is the day we all drive proper cars.
